Position Summary:
 
The Community Peace Officer Level I is responsible for the enforcement of Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statutes within Rocky View County.
 
Core Accountabilities:
 
  • Conduct routine traffic patrols and check stops throughout the County. Detect and enforce existing statutes and regulations in accordance with their Provincial appointments.
  • Conduct Commercial Safety Vehicle Safety Alliance Inspections of commercial vehicles to ensure compliance.
  • Perform traffic control duties which may include: parades, funerals, traffic accident scenes, emergency and non-emergency scenes as required or directed.
  • Partner with other agencies to conduct joint forces operations (JFO) check stops and S.T.E.P. programs.
  • Display strong investigation skills ensuring tact and diplomacy at all times.
  • Ensure Development Appeal Board reports are prepared and submitted in a timely fashion to Development Officer.
  • Identify and report road hazards and other infrastructure deficiencies.
  • Interpret and apply appropriate legislation and policy to enforce laws (including Bylaws) in the jurisdiction.
  • Respond to Municipal Bylaw complaints in a timely manner and resolve complaints through enforcement measures such as: mediation, warning, and prosecution.
  • Ensure a strong focus on customer service requiring both timely and appropriate follow-up with complainants and alleged offenders. Call back on all complaints within 1 hour.
  • Prepare for and attend scheduled court duty as required.
  • Assist with disaster and emergency situations as necessary or directed.
  • Build a positive team atmosphere within the work unit and foster positive relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Display leadership and direction to junior members. Display leadership and guidance when dealing with the public in confrontational or difficult situations.
  • Display decisiveness and take control of confrontational and difficult situations as required.
  • Ensure the highest standards of public service are maintained when dealing with County residents and visitors.
  • Become actively involved in the communities through positive interaction and the use of problem-solving strategies.
  • Meet job expectations, goals or measures.
  • Conduct public educational seminars at assigned schools, service groups and events as required.
  • Protect the integrity of employees and the business of Rocky View County by acting in a professional and responsible manner at all times.
  • Protect privacy, use information appropriately, and maintain the confidentiality and security of all information related to employees, business and residents of Rocky View County.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety Legislation and Rocky View safe work policies and procedures at all times, ensuring the protection and safety of self, co-workers, the public and environment.
 
Position Requirements:
 
  • Two-year law Enforcement Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institute.
  • Five years recent experience related to Canadian law enforcement.
  • Eligible for appointment with the Alberta Solicitor General.
  • Clean Criminal Record.
  • Current Federal Firearm Possession License.
  • Successful completion of PARE physical fitness test.
  • Maintain self-discipline and professionalism at all times.
  • Possess the ability to react quickly and remain calm in stressful situations. Communicate effectively and tactfully – one-on-one or in a group environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of basic computer functions (log on, check emails, open and save documents in MS Office Suite) as well as basic keyboarding skills.
  • Proficiency in Enforcement software, Parcel Information System, CAMS II (Central Asset Management System), and Moves (Motor Vehicle System).
  • Possess a clean, valid class 5 driver’s license.
 
 
Preference will be given to individuals who hold a valid Level 1 Peace Officer Appointment with current radar/laser training as well as commercial vehicle enforcement experience.
