IN-HOUSE STAFF LAWYERS
Two Temporary Full – Time Opportunities
(Maternity leaves – 12 – 15 months)

Reporting to the Acting City Solicitor, the In-House Staff Lawyers will be expected to provide wide-ranging legal services and representation on topics of interest and importance to a local government. In so doing, you will draw on your knowledge of the Local Government Act, Community Charter and other relevant legislation, and your experience working with municipal or other government agencies. The work of the In-House Staff Lawyers may include drafting and preparing bylaws and contracts, and conducting legal research and preparing memoranda on day to day issues arising in the City. These positions will support and take direction from the Acting City Solicitor and give general municipal legal advice to City staff in all departments.

In addition to the foregoing, the focus of one of the two opportunities will be on solicitor’s work and in particular providing advice in connection with land development processes. This lawyer will assist City staff by negotiating, drafting and reviewing agreements including complex partnership and operating agreements, funding agreements, purchase and sale agreements, land encumbrances and other documents related to land development and asset management in the City. A familiarity with municipal development processes and land transactions is preferred and technical knowledge of the LTSA electronic filing system and workings of the LTO is essential.

The focus of the other opportunity will be on in-house litigation management including providing advice on claims management and litigation, preparing court documents and attending Provincial or Supreme Court as Plaintiff or Defence counsel as needed, and liaising with legal counsel on complex litigation matters that are being handled externally. Knowledge of insurance law and specific municipal liability issues is preferred.

Your LLB or JD degree is supplemented by at least 5 – 7 years’ call to the Bar and related experience, and you must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia or be entitled to practice law in a reciprocating jurisdiction.
