Safety Codes Officer II
Planning and Development Services

The Safety Codes Officer II (Building) administers and enforces the Safety Codes Act, regulations and County bylaws to ensure that construction work undertaken in Strathcona County is completed to a uniform standard.

Responsibilities

  • review permit applications and conduct plans examinations
  • provide building inspections and pre-permit site evaluations
  • enforce the Safety Codes Act and related County bylaws, including verbal and written directives, investigation, infraction notices and/or orders, court appearances, recommendation of appropriate solutions and complete follow-up
  • provide accurate technical information to the public, contractors and staff regarding construction and inspections under the Safety Codes Act, Alberta Building Code, and related County bylaws
  • liaise with other branches, departments, municipalities and provincial agencies to provide input and to ensure current legislation and regulatory changes or revisions are clarified and implemented
  • provide input on the formation and implementation of policy and assist with special projects

Qualifications

  • certification as a Building Safety Codes Officer with extensive knowledge of the appropriate building codes and regulations
  • the ability to read and interpret construction designs and plans
  • experience with investigation and enforcement practices, conducting on-site inspections, research and report writing
  • knowledge of construction industry terminology, current trade practices, construction materials, and technology
  • good written and verbal interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills

All candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide a current driver’s abstract.

The annual salary range for this permanent position is $64,392 to $80,499. In addition to providing a dynamic working environment, we offer a 35-hour work week and a competitive benefits package.
